Artist: Louis Saurel is a multi-talented Haitian painter who currently resides in the neighborhoods of Bourdon and Musseau, on the outskirts of Pétion-Ville. Now in his forties, Saurel has been immersed in art since childhood, growing up in a family of artists. Alongside his brother, who is also a painter, he discovered his passion for art at the age of twelve. After school at the Lycée, Saurel would visit the workshop of the renowned artist Jean René Jérôme, where he received mentorship and guidance that helped shape his artistic path. For Saurel, painting was never a necessity but a true calling.

Description :Erzulie Dantor, depicted in this painting, is a powerful and revered Vodou loa (spirit) often associated with love, motherhood, and protection. As the fierce protector of women and children, she embodies resilience, independence, and strength. With her distinctive dark complexion, regal crown, and the child at her side, Erzulie Dantor is often linked to the Black Madonna, symbolizing both divine and earthly maternal care. Her presence in the painting, with her unwavering gaze and firm posture, reflects her duality as a loving mother and a fierce warrior, ready to defend her followers from harm. This artwork captures the essence of her complexity—fierce yet nurturing, invoking the sacred power of womanhood and ancestral strength in Haitian Vodou.
