Artist: Louis Saurel is a multi-talented Haitian painter who currently resides in the neighborhoods of Bourdon and Musseau, on the outskirts of Pétion-Ville. Now in his forties, Saurel has been immersed in art since childhood, growing up in a family of artists. Alongside his brother, who is also a painter, he discovered his passion for art at the age of twelve. After school at the Lycée, Saurel would visit the workshop of the renowned artist Jean René Jérôme, where he received mentorship and guidance that helped shape his artistic path. For Saurel, painting was never a necessity but a true calling.

Description : This evocative impressionist painting "By the river banks" depicts a serene moment in rural Haiti, where villagers gather by a river nestled in the lush Haitian highlands. The scene captures women washing clothes in the river, their silhouettes softly blurred by the painter’s loose brushstrokes, while men pass by on horseback, heading along the riverbank. The artist uses deep greens, earthy browns, and rich blues as the primary color palette, perfectly reflecting the natural beauty of the landscape. The vibrant green of the mountains, dotted with patches of brown earth, contrasts beautifully with the cool blue of the river, which winds gently through the composition. The brushstrokes, bold and textured, lend a sense of movement to the water, while the distant mountains are rendered in softer, mistier hues, creating a sense of depth and tranquility.
